The Dalai Lama and Homeschooling Methods

Sometimes, the difference between homeschooling and a religion are not readily apparent.

Then I read this by the Dalai Lama about Buddhism:

“Don’t try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist;
use it to be a better whatever-you-already-are.”
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

Put whatever homeschooling method or philosophy in the place of Buddhism, and that sums up exactly how I feel about homeschooling, and education in general.

Consider, in particular unschooling. I believe it’s a huge mistake to try to be an unschooler. Like the Dalai Lama suggests, use what we learn from studying or talking about unschooling to be a better whatever we are – even if that means doing something different than what we think unschooling is. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is becoming a better whatever-we-are.
