I was recently contacted about two websites. One on learning math, and another on learning how to run a small business. Normally, I’m not thrilled by websites that focus on teaching something. They are often dry, poorly put together, or repetitive.
I was pleasantly surprised when both of these two recent programs turned out to be pretty darn good!
The first is the Math is Fun website. I was pleased immediately with the layout. There are a lot of puzzles and games, which are appealing and educational. Of course, there are also worksheets. If your kids like online programs for learning math, I’d take a look-see at this one. Oh, and BTW, it’s free.
The second is Johnny Money, a small business simulator created by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). This is a pretty amazing simulation. They’ve gathered all the different elements of starting and running a retail store, and put it together in an easy to use, easy to understand format. This program is skewed older, since it doesn’t water-down the process of opening a business. If you or your child want to know what it’s like financially and practically to run a small business, this is a great website. And it’s also free.
Please post your reviews here if you decide to use them in your family’s education.

We’ve gone from using a soup-to-nuts math curriculum to more of an ad hoc one (we’ve crashed and burned through a couple different math programs), so I love finding good, relevant websites on which my daughter can practice her addition facts. Math is Fun looks really good so far, and the free part is really attractive!

That business one looks like it is potentially fun, but I haven’t had a chance to create an account yet. I’d loved to have a “preview” of the game before having to sign up.

Both sites sound valuable, thanks for presenting them.
