Ok Moms and Dads, this one is for you. What are your 5 favorite things to do that aren’t homeschooling or parenting related?
We’re not only parents, but we are people too. We have our own interests, our own life experiences, and things that are important to us. Our hobbies and outside interests define who we are.
What 5 things do you enjoy doing for yourself?
My five:
1) Writing – Although I write about homeschooling often, I also write about other topics, such as spirituality, politics, games, and pretty much anything that comes to mind. In addition to my nonfiction, I write fiction. Short stories mostly. I have 2.5 novels sitting on my computer (which I did through NaNo), and I have a lot of story ideas. People interest me. Stories are basically about people and what they do.
2) That brings me to the second thing which is – Reading – I read nonfiction most of the time, but I also read fiction. I mostly enjoy pop psych, spirituality, sociology, speculative sci fi, chick lit, young adult fiction, and pretty much anything that grabs my attention with a good title or a good first page. I read 1-2 books a week on average. Last week I read Eat, Pray, Love and You Don’t Have to be Wrong for Me to Be Right. The week before that I read Seducing the Boys Club. Oh, I also love reading magazines.
3) Running/biking – I run for fitness, but also because I enjoy spending time alone, thinking, and connecting with my inner strength. Running puts me in a state of peace and acceptance. I used to run a lot more when I was kid-less. I ran a couple 5ks and trained regularly. Now, I’m lucky to get 1-2 runs in a week. I would, some day, like to train for, and run a marathon. I also like biking off and on. I used to be a swimmer when I was younger. Maybe one day I will do a tri.
4) Spirituality/Meditation – I like to meditate, but I don’t make time very often to sit. Instead, I am an opportunist meditater. When I’m in a long line, driving in traffic, doing chores, or laying in bed before I get up in the morning, for example, I use that time to meditate, breathe, and be mindful of the moment. In addition to practicing the Zen Buddhist approach to meditation, I find the study of religion and spirituality to be invigorating and endlessly interesting. Both of these things are about people, and our interpretation of our existence in this universe together. How can that ever get boring?
5) Video games – I don’t play them as much as I used to, because I have been making a focussed effort to get my career started. But, I have a DS (right now, I’m playing mahjong) and I play World of Warcraft casually (and yes, my hubby coerced me to start up a warlock, even though I swore I wouldn’t go back. What can I do? My hubby’s cute, and hard to resist). I play video games not only as a pass time, but also as a way to connect with my hubby and kids now, if you can believe that.
Ok, your turn! Who are you? Who is hiding behind that homeschooling persona? Also if you have a blog, and want to share, take this opportunity for us to get to know you better at your blog.

Hi Tammy,
Great post. As a new homeschooling parent (18 months) I find it easy to forget that I once had interests of my own.
My five things are:
Cooking: I really enjoy cooking, not that I do it a lot…there are certain criteria that must be met, like the kitchen is clean, no one is nagging me to cook or otherwise whining that they’re hungry and I’m in the mood to get my hands dirty.
Sewing: I know I’m starting to sound like a throw back to the 1950′s but I really do enjoy sewing. Especially by hand, there is something very soothing about the repetitveness of it and the satisfaction of taking pieces of fabric and turning them into something…or sewing on a button for Hubby or fixing Daughter’s bear, again.
Playing Guitar: Unfortunately, I rarely do this when anyone else is around and since someone is almost always here, I don’t get to do it as much as I’d like.
Walking in the Woods: I’m really lucky with this one because even though I live in a major city, there are plenty of parks and trails where I can just go and take a walk.
Blogging: I was going to say “writing” but in truth, I haven’t really written anything that wasn’t blog related (unless you count grocery lists) in such a long time.
That was fun…thanks.

Not homeschooling related, huh? So reading educational curricula catalogs doesn’t count?
1. Knitting
2. Writing/Blogging
3. Long Walks
4. Laughing With Friends
5. Reading, of course…

1. Reading great fiction. Can you say “Es-Caa-Peh”?
2. Making quilts. It’s art, they are functional and it’s FUN!
3. Other hobbies that are meditative and relaxing (sewing & drawing). We (the educating parent) are so intensely focused on contributing to the “greater good” that we really do have to remember not to burn ourselves out.
4. Working up a good sweat! I turn on the iPod, crank up the volume and dance around the kitchen or briskly walk around the block. Those “endogenous opioid polypeptides” are a necessary reminder of the joy of being human.
5. Stare at the starry sky. This is a reminder that I am fine cosmic dust. But what a difference I can make!

It is easy to forget that homeschool moms have other interests!!
Heck, I forget my own and will admit to wondering who I will be when our homeschool life is done!
1. Reading….I like the old British/European variety. Just finished Madame Bovary. Have enjoyed Thomas Hardy, Jane Austin and the like over the years. I also read about learning..a lot!
And lately some gardening as we have a new square foot garden growing.
And great blogs such as this one!
2. Baking!!!! I LOVE to bake!!!!!! Cooking? Not so much!
3. Needlework…cross stitch, crochet and am now learning embroidery.
4. Exercise….I like weights and aerobic stuff. I do it here..at home with DVDs. I’ve lost over 60lbs over the last year and will NOT gain it back and I owe it to WW and The Firm!!
5. Travel. I don’t do it as much as I like but I love to experience other people and places! I subscribe to several travel magazines that help me explore the world from home and give me ideas for where to go next!
I also enjoy local travel….we love to drive to LA and just explore.
Thanks for letting me remind myself that I am more than a homeschool mom!!
