I knew that he homeschooled but I hadn’t heard of this yet. I’ll have to watch the video.

Will Smith rocks! I knew he homeschooled…there was a very interesting article about him and his theory of learning. It was very cool. I wish I could remember where I saw it but how he described his idea of real learning was soooo unschooly.

[…] Tammy posted that now it seems Will Smith is starting a school. Him and a handful of other homeschooling families are coming together to teach their children. There’s just very powerful educational concepts that we believe in, and we feel like ‘I want to design the system that revolutionizes public education. […]

I think it was in Reader’s Digest a few months ago that I read about Will Smith homeschooling. I thought he had some good things to say about how we learn things as adults- if you wanna’ know something, you research it and talk to people who know what you wanna’ know. So why not apply this to kids since it is how they are going to end up learning anyway?

I thought Kelly’s response was interesting- “Get them out of the house”! Excuse me lady, but ifn’ you didn’t want to rear children, why did you conceive them? I don’t understand that attitude.

Summer – What do you think of the video?

Heather – Ya, he does seem kind of out of the box compared to many other homeschooling celebrities. I think he does employ tutors, mostly because he and his wife work so much. I think it would be hard to be a full-on unschooling family and be a family in the industry.

momisteaching – great collection of links you have on your blog post. Thanks for linking me.

sunnniemom – I’m sure that Will Smith doesn’t have say much in regards to that question. I bet they are rarely home. Also, he’s gotten some flack for saying that people don’t need to know about the Boston Tea Party. I tend to agree with him, not because it’s not important information, but because a very large percentage of people slept through that part of history class, and get along in the world just fine.

Beth – thanks for the link!

momlovesbeingathome – me too. What an interesting down to earth guy. They are hard to find here in Hollywood.

I am going to put this school into perspective. Oprah Winfrey has an academy. I believe one for girls and the other boys. As far as I know Will Smith’s school in California are co-ed. Secondly Oprah built her Academy from the ground up. They just invetsed $1 million dollars up from $20K. But still down from overall investment dollars in education. You have to have $12k a year to attend. Oprah Academy addresses social issues. I was only home schooled in preschool. My cousins were homeschooled. And Chris Brown now has a tutor. I heard he was in South Africa advocating for Oprah’s Academy and promoting his new release about the album. I went to school as soon as the doors opened. But I do see a connection on spirtuality and secular beliefs aside from the Bible.
